Family Weekend!

NCECBVI will host the opportunity
for parents to meet network and attend informational sessions. The
newly formed Nebraska Chapter of the National Association for Parents
of Children with Visual Impairments (NAPVI) will also offer organizational
information to parents. Teachers of the visually impaired, UNL VI
endorsement student teachers, and NCECBVI support staff will develop
educational and recreational activities for the kids while the parents
are in the meetings. This weekend will include a Parents Night Out!

This weekend is designed for families with children who
are visually impaired. Parents will be able to attend a variety of informational
sessions, network with other parents, and enjoy an evening out and about
in Nebraska City. Several presenters will provide information regarding
various educational programs and services available in Nebraska. In
addition, the Nebraska Chapter of the National Association for Parents
of Children with Visual Impairments (NAPVI) will meet to proceed with
the formation of the organization and offer the opportunity for other
parents to learn more about NAPVI and how they can become involved.
Other notes of interest:

Each family member planning to attend must be registered
on the Reach for the Stars Family Weekend Registration Form. This
weekend is designed for the parents and families. A registration form
for the student only will not be accepted.

Families may arrive at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June
25th. Families may depart by noon on Sunday, June 27th.

Registration will be limited to 10 families. Space
is limited. There is no registration fee for this event! All meals
and snacks will be provided (except for the parents’ evening
out). If a family would like to attend, but is not able to stay for
the entire weekend, please note that on the registration form. Priority
will be given to those families who can commit to the entire weekend.

If you register for one of these events, but later
realize that you and your family will not be able to attend, please
notify us at (800) 826-4355 by June 18th to allow another family to
attend.

Dorm rooms will be assigned to match the needs of
the family. Please note that housing is dormitory style with a common
bathroom between two dorm rooms. Parents and children (one family)
will most likely be roomed together. Bathroom facilities may need
to be shared between two families.

All needed accommodations must be noted on the registration
form such as: diet, alternative format of written materials for parents,
interpreter services for children and/or parents, etc.

Written correspondence will be provided to all families
who register regarding your status of admittance – if your registration
has been accepted as one of 10 families or if you are on a waiting
list. Returned, completed registration packets will be date-stamped
…. First ten received will be the first ones registered.

A minimum registration from 4 families is needed
to provide a weekend event.

Summer Camp
June
11- June 17, 2010
Students are asked to arrive at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June
11th.
The camp will end at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 17th.
This camp will be filled with lots
of fun activities, infused with skill instruction, and will offer
students the opportunity to gain new experiences! Instruction will
be provided by NCECBVI teachers and UNL VI endorsement student teachers.

All school-aged children with visual impairments are welcome
to attend. Children will participate in instructional lessons
in classrooms, enjoy the great outdoors and partake in summer
fun activities. This year, the students will be circling the NCECBVI
campus on the Animal Planet! A variety of lessons will focus on
animals, and a field trip to the Lewis and Clark Interpretive
Center will be included where the students will learn more about
the animals on their trek across the plains.
Students are asked to arrive at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11th.
The camp will end at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 17th.
Specific instruction and activities will be based on the ages
and needs of the students who are enrolled. The NCECBVI teachers
and staff, along with the assistance of the UNL vision endorsement
teachers, will embed core and expanded core curriculum into the
daily schedules. Students will gain new experiences, learn and
apply social skills, meet other students with visual impairments,
and maybe even practice their Braille!
