HOW TO CHOOSE A COMPUTER THAT WORKS WITH JAWS

As of April, 2001

Processor and Speed

Any speed above 200mhz will work, 400mhz or fasters is best

Celeron, Pentium II or III, VI  all will work with Jaws.

 

Memory

At least 64 mb of RAM (SDRAM) is needed for jaws to work with Windows 98 and

Microsoft Word 2000. More memory is better. 128mb of ram is suggested

 

Storage

Hard Drive of at least 3 GB

1.44 Floppy Disk Drive, Best if it is built in

CD player at least 12x.

DVD Players are not needed but they will work.

 

Operating System:

Microsoft@ Windows 98® Second Edition or Windows ME are needed.

 

Modem

An internal modem is needed for Internet access over phone lines.

Ethernet is also useful in school and colleges Or where a high speed cable or dsl has been brought into a home.

 

Speakers:

The unit should have built in speakers.

A set of external speakers are also suggested as well as a headphone.

 

Software:

Microsoft Office:2000 Standard

JAWS 3.7

OmniPage Pro 10 would be helpful if you would be using a scanner

 

Battery:

Laptop units should include an Intelligent Lithium-Ion Battery with a life of 3-4 hours is suggested. A 2nd battery is also useful

 

Carrying Cases:

Laptop units should include Nylon Carrying Case, Dual Compartment, should have room for all cables and a few Disks and CD's.

 

Ports

Printer Port

USB: This port is useful for hooking up printers, Scanner, keyboard and other devices without having to turn the computer off

 

Screen

Should support 800x600 resolution.
